Let's Dance

Sorting through the papers of the Just A Girl kit from ScraptasticClub, I was struck by the beauty of the sheet with white and yellow flowers on a grey background, and knew just the photo I'd scrap. This is Kevin picking up his date, a swim friend, for his first high school boy-girl dance.

Once I decided on that sheet from the kit, I went through my stash and pulled out everything I could find in a coordinating yellow. So while it began with the kit, it ended somewhere else completely! ;)

The title was a given, especially since this layout was put together the week that David Bowie passed away. I'd forgotten just how many great songs he had graced us with throughout the years. Let's Dance was one of the best.

THIS Will Be A Scrapbook Page One Day-Funny!

It's like that picture of a pencil and a cassette.

We're trying to figure out what to do with all our old audio equipment. You know...component systems, oversized and outdated:

There's really no need to keep any of it. Do you think I'll suddenly want to play those LPs from the 70s...on a turntable!? Nah...doubt it.

I already threw out all our old cassettes so the dinosaur cassette deck is a real waste of space.

Consider the set of gargantuan speakers that flank the equally obsolete entertainment center. Just give me some tiny Bose instead. Once that big piece of furniture is emptied, it's going too. Maybe we'll keep the CD changer...but maybe not.

So...we're talking about all this obsolete equipment and my 13 year old asks "What's a cassette?"

I happen to have some in a box for Goodwill, so I take one out to show him. He looks at it, kinda remembers seeing these before, and wonders aloud,

"Where's the ON button?"

Seriously! We were killing ourselves laughing. Wow.

Jazz Fest Memory

Lately, I've been pulling out photos to scrap that are less than perfect. You know the ones. With a memory or story behind them, you print them, but then you are less inspired to scrap them. I have an envelope of these, some from 8 years back. The photo I took this particular day at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival was a blurry one, but there was a story there, a story that I had written down in my blog...way back in 2007. I was able to go back into my blog archives, find what I'd written, edit it for my page, and print it out. What could be easier!?

And what could go better with this picture than the papers from Echo Park's This & That Charming collection? They were perfect. They even had a paper with various tickets and receipts, one of which was a "raincheck"...so appropriate for my story.

The Jazz Fest 2012 schedule has come out, and I'm already trying to decide which day to go. Should I see the Eagles, the Beach Boys, the Foo Fighters, the Neville Brothers or Glen Hansard? Most of course are on different days or conflicting times! It figures.

Are We Human

Every once in a while I hear a great song that has it all...intriguing lyrics and soulful melody. This is one of them. From their new album, Day and Age, the Killers...

YouTube-Human-performed on BBC2's Later

I did my best to notice
When the call came down the line
Up to the platform of surrender
I was brought but I was kind
And sometimes I get nervous
When I see an open door
Close your eyes
Clear your heart...
Cut the cord

Chorus

Are we human?
Or are we dancer?
My sign is vital
My hands are cold
And I'm on my knees
Looking for the answer
Are we human?
Or are we dancer?

Pay my respects to grace and virtue
Send my condolences to good
Give my regards to soul and romance,
They always did the best they could
And so long to devotion
You taught me everything I know
Wave goodbye
Wish me well..
You've got to let me go

(Chorus)

Will your system be alright
When you dream of home tonight?
There is no message we're receiving
Let me know is your heart still beating

Are we human?
Or are we dancer?
My sign is vital
My hands are cold
And I'm on my knees
Looking for the answer

You've got to let me know

(Chorus)

Are we human?
Or are we dancer?

Are we human
Or are we dancer?

Jazz Fest Experience

I don't know if you've kept up with the weather in the gulf states this last day or two, but let me tell you...it was something else!!! Terrible thunderstorms, inches of rain, street flooding, etc! The PITS! And Friday was the day I had planned to attend Jazz Fest with three of my sisters.

We sat around most of the morning waiting for the weather to clear...somewhat. Or at least until there weren't those menacing red bands, numerous lightening strikes and areas of rotation! Finally, we changed our plans and went to lunch instead, through floodwaters actually, to a fabulous restaurant in the burbs...Dragos! Char-broiled oysters, fried ravioli with crawfish sauce and seafood pasta! YUM!

But still...I was so depressed thinking about missing Better Than Ezra AND Counting Crows. I mean, how often are two of your favorite bands playing at the same place, same stage, same day??? So...I go to pick up my middle son from school at 4:00 (after serving a detention for having his hair too long...when you pull it around the ear!) While I'm waiting for him, I have this brilliant idea...!!! Why don't we go RIGHT NOW! He gets in the car and I ask him! "Let's Go!" he says! Of course, Tommy thinks I'm crazy, but he looks at the radar for me and it looks safe. Our luck has started to change! And even better, we found free parking! THEN as we were walking up to the gate a man getting into his car asked if we needed tickets. $10 he said! I knew they weren't tearing tickets (just scanning them) and it could be a scam with already used tickets, but he showed me his school ID (St. Augustine teacher) and Driver's License and promised me they were legit. I gave him $20! If they weren't good, I knew his name and where he worked...a respectable Catholic high school! Well, we got in! And saved $70 by trusting that guy!!! Hee-hee!

Anyway...we picked our way through the crowds, got as close as possible and caught most of BTE. Then came Adam Duritz and gang! Counting Crows were awesome!!! He didn't take a break! Sang his heart out! So, the dreariest, wettest day in months turned out pretty darned good! Amen!!! I was happy!

Wet Weather Forecast

Would you wade through mud...to see Counting Crows and Better Than Ezra...eat Crawfish Monica and White Chocolate Bread Pudding...enjoy gospel, soul, etc? It is supposed to STORM tomorrow and we have been planning to spend the day at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. I am so bummed that they are forecasting 3-5 inches of rain! I'm afraid no one will want to go...but I DO!!! I have been psyching myself all week with CDs in my car and will be soooo disappointed if our plans fall through.

I have a poncho, umbrella, and extra shoes. Mud washes off. At least it won't be so hot!
